Character Counter: Count Text With or Without Spaces
A character counter helps check limits on forms, page titles, social captions and messages. Paste text to see the current count, then adjust the wording to fit the destination.
Check a text character limit
- Paste or type your text in the input area.
- Read the character count displayed by the tool.
- Check whether spaces and line breaks are included in the count.
- Edit the text and recheck until it fits the destination limit.
- Verify the final text in the destination app, which may count characters differently.
Characters, spaces and line breaks
Some services count spaces, line breaks, emoji or combined Unicode characters differently. Use the target service’s own counter when a strict limit matters.
Write for the reader as well as the limit
A shorter text is not automatically clearer. Keep essential context and remove repetition before trimming useful details.
Two counts at once
The tool shows the number of characters including spaces and the number excluding whitespace. A character here means what a reader sees as one symbol, so an accented letter or a simple emoji counts as one. Line breaks and tabs are part of the whitespace that the second number leaves out. Use the first number for limits that count spaces, and the second when you only want to count letters, digits and punctuation.
Typical limits to check
Search results often show only the first 150 to 160 characters of a page description, a standard text message usually holds 160 characters in the basic alphabet, and a message in Urdu or Arabic script is usually counted in shorter parts of about 70 characters. Social media posts, bio fields, product titles and application forms have their own limits too. Always check the limit that the service itself states.
Fitting text to a limit
Write the full message first, then cut repetition and filler words and keep the facts. Recheck the count after every edit, and confirm the final text in the real form, because the destination may count line breaks or special characters in its own way. A shorter text is only better if it still says what the reader needs to know.
Frequently asked questions
Are spaces characters?
Many platforms count spaces, but the exact rule depends on the destination. Check its guidance for strict limits.
Why might emoji counts differ between tools?
Some emoji use multiple Unicode code points or joined symbols. Different applications may display and count those sequences differently.
Are spaces counted as characters?
In the first number, yes. The second number leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Does an emoji count as one character?
Usually yes, as one visible symbol. Another service may count it as two or more, so test in the destination.
Why does the site I paste into show a different number?
Services count line breaks, emoji and special letters in their own way. Trust the destination for strict limits.
