How to Use a Currency Converter with Live Exchange Rates

A currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another using an exchange rate. This free tool uses live mid-market rates for about 160 currencies, refreshed about once a day. Choose two currencies, type the amount and read the result. Nothing you type is stored.

  5. Use the table below to see the same amount in popular currencies.

How current are the rates

The rates update about once a day, and the page shows when they were last updated. They are not tick-by-tick market prices, so the number can differ from a live trading screen.

Why your bank or money changer shows a different number

Banks, cards and money changers add fees or a margin to the mid-market rate. Use this converter for estimates and comparison, then confirm the exact rate and fees with your provider before sending money.

Source and limits

Rates come from the free open endpoint of ExchangeRate-API and are credited on the page. If the live source is busy for a short time, a saved copy of the latest rates may be shown. The tool needs an internet connection and is not meant for trading.

Reading the rate

Under the result the page shows the rate that was used and the time it was last updated. The rates are updated about once a day and come from the free ExchangeRate-API service. They are mid-market rates, the middle point between buying and selling prices, which is the number you see in the news but not usually the number you are offered. The table below the converter shows the same amount in popular currencies.

Why your offer is different

Banks, cards and money changers either add a fee or give you a worse rate than the middle rate. The difference is the margin. If the converter shows 75 and a provider offers 73, the margin is 2 on 75, which is about 2.7 percent. Compare the final amount the person receives, after fees, and the time the transfer takes, before you choose a provider.

Using the converter well

Use it to plan, compare prices in another country and check a quote. It needs an internet connection, and it is not made for trading or for exact accounting, because rates move during the day. Before you send money, ask your provider for the exact rate, all fees and the amount that will arrive.
