How to Use an Image Resizer to Set Width and Height
An image resizer adjusts pixel dimensions for a website, document or upload form. Enter the dimensions required by the destination and review sharpness and proportions after processing.
Resize to specific pixel dimensions
- Choose an image file and note its current dimensions.
- Enter the desired output width in pixels.
- Enter the desired output height in pixels.
- Process the resize, then inspect the image at its intended display size.
- Download the new copy and compare it with the source before replacing anything.
Pixel size and aspect ratio
Width and height control the pixel canvas. If the tool does not lock the aspect ratio, entering unrelated values can stretch the subject. Choose dimensions that preserve the intended proportions.
Upscaling and image quality
Increasing pixel dimensions does not restore detail that was absent from the source. For crisp results, start with a sufficiently large original and use the target platform’s recommended dimensions.
Crop first, then resize
If your picture has the wrong shape, use the optional Crop first step. Choose a box shape, for example the same shape as the output size or a square 1:1, then drag the box to move it or its corners and edges to resize it, and press Apply crop. The cropped area becomes the picture to resize, and the width and height boxes show its new size. Restore original brings the first picture back.
Pixels, not file size
The tool changes the width and the height of a picture in pixels. Enter the size that a form, a website or a document asks for and the picture is redrawn at that size. Changing the pixel size usually changes the file size too, but not by a fixed amount, so check the number that you must meet. If you only need a smaller file, Image Compressor can help.
Keep the proportions
If the new width and height do not have the same shape as the original, the picture will look stretched or squashed. Work out the second number from the first: if a picture is 4000 by 3000 and you want a width of 1000, the height for the same shape is 750. For a size that has a different shape, crop the picture first with Image Cropper and then resize it.
Making a picture bigger
Enlarging a picture cannot add detail that was never there, so it looks softer or blocky. Always start from the largest original that you have, and shrink it when you need a smaller version. Keep the original, because a resized picture cannot be enlarged back to the same quality.
Frequently asked questions
What dimensions should I use?
Use the pixel dimensions requested by the website, document, print workflow or upload form where the image will appear.
Does resizing reduce file size?
It may, because fewer pixels can require less data, but the final size also depends on image format and compression settings.
What size should a passport or form photo be?
Use the size written in the instructions of that form or office, in pixels or in millimetres converted to pixels.
Does resizing make the file smaller?
Usually, but the result depends on the picture. Check the final size against the limit.
Why does my picture look stretched?
The new width and height do not match the original shape. Calculate one from the other.
