Image Rotator: Turn a Picture 90, 180 or 270 Degrees
Use an image rotator to correct a sideways photo or change a layout orientation. Select an angle, process the image and check that the result is upright before sharing.
Correct image orientation
- Choose an image file from your device.
- Select 90, 180 or 270 degrees clockwise.
- Process the rotation and inspect the full preview.
- Check that the subject and any embedded text are upright.
- Download the rotated output as a separate file.
Choose a rotation angle
A 90-degree turn changes portrait to landscape or landscape to portrait. A 180-degree turn turns the image upside down; 270 degrees clockwise is equivalent to 90 degrees counterclockwise.
Orientation metadata and output
Some photos carry orientation metadata from a camera or phone. Review the generated pixels in the target app because image viewers can interpret metadata differently.
When to rotate a picture
Rotate a picture when it opens sideways or upside down in the place where you want to use it, for example a phone photo of a form that you plan to turn into a PDF, or a scan that was fed into the scanner the wrong way. A 90 degree turn changes a portrait picture into a landscape one, and a 180 degree turn fixes an upside-down picture. The tool turns pictures by right angles only and cannot straighten a slight tilt.
Choosing the angle
The angles are measured clockwise. If the top of your subject points to the left, turn the picture 90 degrees clockwise. If it points to the right, turn it 270 degrees clockwise, which is the same as 90 degrees counterclockwise. If you are not sure, try one angle, look at the preview and change it. Check that any text in the picture reads from left to right and from top to bottom.
Saving and sharing the result
The rotated picture is a separate file, and your original stays as it is. Some programs read a hidden orientation flag that cameras write into a photo, so a picture can look correct in one app and sideways in another. After downloading, open the file in the place where you will use it. If you need to turn the pages of a PDF instead of a picture, use Rotate PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Which setting turns a sideways photo upright?
Try 90 or 270 degrees clockwise based on which direction the subject needs to face.
Will rotation overwrite my original?
No. The browser creates a separate file for download.
Which angle turns a sideways photo upright?
Try 90 degrees if the top of the picture points left and 270 degrees if it points right. The preview shows the result before you download.
Can it fix a slightly crooked photo?
No. It turns pictures by 90, 180 or 270 degrees only.
Does rotating make the picture worse?
The picture keeps its size and content. Rotation by right angles swaps its width and height. Check the result in the app where you will use it.
