Line Counter: Count Lines in Text or a List
A line counter is useful for checking a list, transcript, code snippet or pasted document. Add the text and review how blank lines and line breaks contribute to the count.
Count text lines
- Paste or type text into the input box.
- Read the displayed line total.
- Check whether empty lines are included in the current count.
- Add or remove line breaks and review the updated total.
- Compare with the destination editor if it defines lines differently.
What counts as a line
A line is generally separated by a line break. Some editors treat a trailing line break or blank line differently, so totals may vary slightly between applications.
Use line counts to inspect lists
Line counts can help check row-based data or a pasted list, but they do not validate duplicates, formatting or whether each line contains a complete record.
How lines are counted
The tool counts the pieces of text that are separated by line breaks. An empty box gives 0 lines. A blank line in the middle of the text counts as a line, and so does a last line that has no text after a final line break, so the number can be one higher than the number of items you can see. Paste your text and the total appears in the result.
Practical uses
Use it to check how many names are in a pasted list, how many rows a copied table has, how many lines a log, a poem or a script contains, and whether two copies of a list have the same number of entries. If the first line is a heading, subtract one. Clean the text first with Text Cleaner if there are many blank lines you do not want to count.
Why other programs may differ
Some editors do not count the empty line after the last line break, and files from different systems use different line-ending characters, although the tool treats all common types as line breaks. If a number matters, for example when loading data into another program, compare the count with that program and look for blank lines at the end of the text.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my line count different from a text editor?
Editors may treat a final newline, blank lines or different line-ending characters differently.
Can I count blank lines?
The display follows the tool’s line-counting behavior. Inspect the text and compare with the destination if blank lines matter.
Does a blank line count?
Yes. Every line separated by a line break counts, including empty ones.
Why is my number one higher than my list?
Probably a blank line at the end of the text. Delete it and count again.
What number does an empty box give?
0 lines.
