Tip Calculator: Calculate a Tip and Split the Bill

A tip calculator helps estimate a gratuity and per-person share. Enter the bill and tip percentage, then check local customs and whether service charges are already included.

Calculate and split a bill

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to estimate.
  3. Set the number of people sharing the bill.
  4. Calculate and review the tip amount, total and per-person share.
  5. Adjust rounding so the amounts add up to the amount collected.

Tip percentage and service charges

The calculator applies the percentage you enter to the bill amount. It does not know whether tax or a service charge is already included, or what gratuity is customary in your location.

Rounding shared payments

Rounding each person’s share can make the sum differ by a small amount from the total. Confirm the final collection amount before paying.

The three numbers

Enter the bill, the tip percentage from 0 to 100 and the number of people who share it. The tool shows the tip, the total and each person's share. A bill of 120 with a 15 percent tip gives a tip of 18 and a total of 138, which is 34.50 each for four people. The percentage is applied to the amount you type, so decide in advance whether that amount includes tax or a service charge.

Tip, tax and service charge

Customs differ from country to country. In some places a tip of 10 to 20 percent is usual, in others a service charge is already added to the bill and an extra tip is optional, and in some places tipping is not expected at all. Look at the bill, and if a service charge is included, you may not need to add more. The calculator does not know the custom where you are.

Splitting fairly

When the total does not divide evenly, the shares are rounded, so the total of all shares can differ by a little from the bill. Round up to a whole number that you can actually pay, and let one person cover the small difference. If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person's own part first and then share the tip in proportion.

Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Practices vary by location and preference. Enter the bill base you intend to use and follow applicable local guidance.

Why do individual shares not add up exactly?

Rounding to currency units can create a small difference. Adjust the final split to match the actual total.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Practices differ. Enter the amount you want to base the tip on and follow local custom.

Why do the shares not add up exactly?

Each share is rounded to cents or to the smallest coin. Adjust the last share.

Can I use it without splitting?

Yes. Leave the number of people at 1.
