Time Calculator: Add or Compare Hours and Minutes
A time calculator can help add durations or compare times while planning a shift, class, trip or project. Confirm whether you are entering a duration or a clock time before calculating.
Calculate a time duration
- Enter the hours and minutes for the first duration.
- Enter a second duration or time value as requested.
- Choose the calculation action and review the result.
- Check whether the result crosses midnight or represents more than 24 hours.
- Confirm breaks, time zones or daylight-saving changes separately when scheduling.
Clock time and elapsed duration differ
A duration such as 2 hours 30 minutes is not the same as a clock reading such as 2:30 PM. Identify the input format before interpreting a result.
Scheduling and payroll checks
This simple calculation does not apply overtime rules, breaks, holidays, time zones or employer policies. Verify official schedules and payroll totals independently.
What the calculator does
The tool adds two durations. Enter the hours and minutes of the first duration, then the additional hours and minutes, and it shows the total in hours and minutes and also in minutes only. For example 2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes is 4 hours 15 minutes, or 255 minutes. It adds lengths of time; it does not work with clock times such as 9:00 AM.
Typical uses
Use it to add up work or study sessions, the parts of a journey, the lengths of video clips, the time spent on a task over several days or the time of two exercise sessions. Add the first two durations, then use the total as the first duration when you need to add a third. Minutes above 59 are converted into hours automatically, so 8 hours 50 minutes plus 7 hours 40 minutes shows 16 hours 30 minutes.
What it leaves out
The calculator does not know about breaks, overtime rules, holidays, time zones or daylight-saving changes, and it does not subtract one clock time from another. For payroll or attendance records use the official records of your employer or school, and check the result against them. If you need a figure in decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60, so 255 minutes is 4.25 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can a duration exceed 24 hours?
A duration can span multiple days, but check how the displayed tool formats totals above one day.
Does this account for time zones?
No. It performs simple time arithmetic and does not resolve time-zone or daylight-saving changes.
How do I turn minutes into hours?
Divide by 60. For example 255 minutes is 4 hours 15 minutes, or 4.25 hours.
Can it find the time between 9:00 and 17:30?
No. It adds durations. Work out the difference between clock times yourself, then use the result here.
Does it handle time zones?
No. It only adds hours and minutes.
